China: The Book Makes a Surprising Comeback

It is the comeback of the summer that nobody expected: the paper book resumes colors in China.

Despite recent efforts by Amazon and the release of its ereader, the Chinese still prefer the paper book.

More surprisingly, they are more numerous to read on paper than a year ago. Paper readers, therefore, increased by more than 3 percentage points compared to 2016.

This is the first time in three years that there are fewer readers on smartphones, tablets, or readers.

The explanation is simple: bookstores are more numerous in large Chinese cities, especially Shanghai, and readers have more ease to find paper books near their homes.
